27-28 Sep 2012: Eating Disorders and Self-Harm

Conference, Tampere Hall, 27-28 September, 2012
Understanding and Treating Eating Disorders and Self-Harm
Evidence-Based Approaches

Paul van Heeswijk, UK, & team from
Eating Disorders Child and Adolescent Service –
Wisteria Ward, Springfield University Hospital

Eating disorders and different kinds of self-harm are increasing phenomena among young people and even very young children more often suffer from these intertwined difficulties. Now we have a unique opportunity to learn about a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of these young people. The team from Eating Disorders Child and Adolescent Service – Wisteria Ward, Springfield University Hospital will share their experience of working with young people suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia and self-harm.

Throughout the conference two real cases will be followed to link theory and practice and to demonstrate the different treatment modalities used in each case. Through this the audience will learn a variety of practical and therapeutic approaches to apply to these often complex cases.

The training has been accepted into national credits of special training for medical doctors.

AIM: This conference will give the attendees a Brief Introduction to the Service and how it evolved in line with evidence. The service offers medical, psychiatric, nursing, a variety of psychotherapeutic interventions and family work. The team includes doctor(s), psychologist, nurse, occupational therapist, psychotherapist, social worker, teachers and family therapist. Together they will take you through the patients’ journey to recovery, and will use film and role plays in addition to presentations to illustrate the team working and specific interventions. One size does NOT fit all – the clinic adapts treatment to make sense and fit with the patients and family’s needs. By the end of the conference delegates should be able to consider different therapeutic approaches and think about how they work individually and as teams with these young people and their families.

AUDIENCE: For psychologists, medical doctors and psychiatrists, social workers, psychotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses… all who are interested in and working with young people suffering from eating disorders and self-harm and their families.
